Yukon Experience

Though knitting and qiviuq are the focus of the weekend, you will also experience the Yukon. In addition to seeing the musk-oxen at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, you will have an informative tour of the Preserve to see the other northern animals – caribou, mule deer, bison, moose, elk, mountain goats, lynx, arctic fox and sheep.  www.yukonwildlife.ca

Just down the road from the Preserve is Takhini Hot Springs, a natural mineral spring where you can swim or soak to relax. At the end of March or beginning of April, it will probably still be winter in the Yukon, but the sun will have returned. You will sit in the hot pools, head cool, body hot, enjoying the mountains that surround you. It is a wonderful experience!   www.takhinihotsprings.yk.ca

A tour of the City of Whitehorse www.visitwhitehorse.com featuring historic buildings from the gold rush era and the building blitz of the Alaska Highway will give you a sense of what makes this northern capital so distinctive! Whitehorse is known as “the wilderness city” … a blend of spectacular northern scenery, vibrant community life and all the services you need, including Knit Now, the local yarn shop! (What more does a person need?)

Nationally acclaimed theatre or music performance will be part of your Yukon Experience.

On Saturday evening March 19, the theatre experience will be at the Old Fire Hall in downtown Whitehorse. This restored historic building is used as a community hall and theatre venue. Featured on this weekend is Trudeau Stories by Brooke Johnson www.trudeaustories.com – a one-person show about a surprising friendship.

On Saturday evening April 2, the theatre experience will be at the Yukon Arts Centre theatre, a performing arts theatre with 428 seats including a balcony. www.yukonartscentre.com Jorge Miguel’s Flamenco Ensemble will be performing – singers, percussionists, bassists and dancers.  Jorge Miguel is a Spanish Canadian guitarist and composer who takes flamenco somewhere new!
